Frank Miller Lumber Company, Inc. (FML) began filling small orders for local farmers in Union City more than a century ago. Today, the family-run enterprise has exchanged the crosscut saw and steel wheeled wagon of its earliest days for state-of-the-art sawmill and kiln drying technology. This has allowed FML to expand its customer base and gain the reputation for being a thriving, global business. The collective leadership of the Miller family has made FML one of the world’s largest producers of quartersawn hardwoods.
FML specializes in manufacturing quality quartersawn lumber in many different species, with the bulk of its production in White and Red Oak. Other species available in both quartersawn and plain sawn are: Cherry, Hickory, Hard Maple, Poplar and Walnut. While FML doesn’t actually manufacture plain sawn hardwoods, high-end, quality green lumber is purchased from reputable local sawmills and dried in FML’s state-of-the-art kilns.
Throughout the years, FML has specialized in producing quartersawn hardwood lumber at its 20-acre founding location in the heart of the American Midwest - Union City, Indiana - under the same family ownership. As customers came back year after year, telling their friends and business associates about FML, the commitment to excellence and customer service was maintained by making sure that quality was never compromised. In 2000, FML expanded its operations to include a 700,000bf kiln operation and concentration yard in Salem, Indiana. This is where FML's plain sawn hardwoods are dried and custom kiln drying is offered.
FML employs approximately 200 people and operates two production shifts in order to meet demand.
The family's stewardship enabled FML to develop new market research, product diversity, and updated technology. The family's proactive approach to business has earned the company a reputation for being one of the nation's most reliable hardwood providers.
Quartersawn hardwoods are enjoying a resurgence in popularity that began in the 1980s and continues today. The world's increasing interest in quartersawn's unique grain pattern and incomparable strength has established an important new market for FML, enabling the company to continue its impressive rate of expansion.
FML sets the standard for high quality quartersawn lumber. FML hardwoods are ideal for high-end cabinetry, furniture, architectural millwork, doors, and flooring. FML's quartersawn lumber is the same fine quality wood used by artisans for more than a century.
Commitment to Community
FML is one of the largest employers in Randolph County, Indiana. As such, FML takes its commitment to the community very seriously, and is very active in community projects throughout Union City and Randolph County. For several years, FML, through its employee contributions, has been a community leader in donations to the local United Way campaign. FML has also made significant contributions to the Randolph County YMCA through employee participation and financial contributions. FML employees have won the YMCA Corporate Challenge several times.
